1. Install It and the Shortcut That Makes It Worth Having
The app is 154MB and needs macOS 14. Almost all of its value is one keyboard shortcut, and there are two of them, not the one everybody writes about.

You can use ChatGPT in a browser tab for free and never install anything. So the first honest question about the desktop app is whether it does anything the tab does not.
It does, and it is almost entirely one feature. Everything else in this course builds on it.
Getting it, and what you are actually installing
Download it from chatgpt.com/download. Take it from there and nowhere else: this is a popular app name and the search results for it are not all what they claim to be.

Those Mac figures are from the copy on our own machine, version 1.2026.119, rather than from a spec sheet. One thing worth knowing before you install: the 154 MB is not the whole story. The app fetches a substantial runtime after first launch, and we measured that separately in our piece on what lands in your cache folder, which includes a headless copy of LibreOffice. If you are tight on disk, budget more than the download suggests.
Sign in with the same account you use in the browser. Your conversation history follows you; nothing needs migrating.
The one feature that justifies the install
Press Option + Space on a Mac, or Alt + Space on Windows.
A small input box appears over whatever you are looking at. You type, you get an answer, you dismiss it. You never left the document, the terminal, the email or the spreadsheet you were in.
That sounds minor written down. In practice it is the whole difference, because it removes the part of using AI that actually costs you: switching to a browser, finding the right tab, losing your place, and coming back thirty seconds later having forgotten what you were doing. A question you can ask without leaving the window is a question you will actually ask.
The test for whether this is for you. Think about the last time you wanted to ask something but did not bother because it was not worth opening a tab for. That specific friction is what the shortcut removes. If you never feel it, the browser is genuinely fine and you can stop here.
There are two launcher shortcuts, and almost nobody mentions the second
This one we found by reading the app's own settings rather than the documentation. There are two separate launcher commands with two separate shortcuts:

The first is the floating box everyone writes about. The second attaches the launcher to the window you are currently in, which is the one you want when you are working inside a single app and want the question to stay tied to it.
Both are configurable. On Windows the companion window hotkey lives at Settings, App, Companion window hotkey, and you will need it if something already owns Alt + Space, which is common.
Three things to try in your first ten minutes
Do these from the shortcut, not from the main window, because the point is the absence of a context switch.
- Ask about something on your screen. Not "what is X" but "the error in front of me says [paste it], what is it asking for". The launcher is designed for exactly this length of interaction.
- Ask for a sentence, not an essay. "Give me one line telling my landlord the heating is still broken, firm but not rude." Dismiss, paste, done.
- Ask it to define something in the document you are reading. No tab, no search, no losing your place.
If none of those feel better than what you do now, that is a real answer and worth knowing after ten minutes rather than ten days.
When the shortcut does nothing
This is the most common first problem and it is almost never the app. Something else already owns the key combination, and whichever program registered it first wins silently.

The fix is to change the shortcut rather than to hunt for the conflict. Pick something nothing else wants: a modifier combination with a number is usually free, which is presumably why the second launcher defaults to Shift plus Option plus 1.
A note for Windows
Alt plus Space has meant "open the window menu" in Windows since long before any of this, so you are overriding a system default rather than claiming an empty one. It works, and if you use that menu you will miss it.
The setting is at Settings, App, Companion window hotkey. Worth changing on day one rather than discovering the conflict later in the middle of something.
What the desktop app does not fix
Being straight about it, because the install is not magic:
- It is the same model. Nothing about the desktop app makes answers more accurate. Everything in our Super Beginner course about checking what it tells you applies identically here.
- Your plan still governs limits. Free is free in both places, with the same caps.
- It is another background app. On our machine it holds about 14 MB of settings and support files, which is nothing, but it is one more thing running.
Before the next lesson
Install it, sign in, and set the shortcut to something your hands will actually find. Then use it three times today from the keyboard without opening the main window.
